The latest telecom equipment manufacturer to cut staff in Ottawa is Marconi. The struggling British company announced it has cut 50 research employees in Ottawa and intends to move development work to Pittsburgh.
Marconi sales in the most recent quarter fell 64 per cent. The company plans to reduce its global workforce from 19,000 to 15,000 early next year after cutting 2,000 jobs last quarter.

About 100 Marconi employees from the former Northwood Technologies will continue to work out of a Kanata development centre. Their wireless software work is all that remains of Marconi's ambitious plans for the Ottawa region. Marconi bought Northwood in May 2001 for $42 million.

Company spokesman Jim Blew said the cuts were part of Marconi's plans to align operating costs with revenues.
