[问题] 3 feet of joist liner missing for 4 years

Hi XDJM,

I moved into this new house 4 years ago, but until today I didn't find that there were 3 feet of joist liner missing in my basement, which connect to 2nd floow vent.

In other words, my furnace suched basement cold air all the time.

Just wonder if this should be covered by ontario new home warranty?

恕我孤陋，这Joist Liner是个啥？是如何发现缺了三?的？要是有照片就更好啦。

Tarion的保险，water penetration保两年，major structure components保七年。这个Liner该不是major structore component吧？要是这样，保修期就已过了，只好自己想办法。

如果因为缺了它，major structure components受了影响，还可试试Tarion。不过我觉得最好还是先找Builder。找之前，把这毛病、还有它造成的后果尽可能地弄清。

Actually this "joist liner" is just the air pipe to connect cold air return from vents upstairs.

Duct cleaning guy found this, because when he put on his vacume, he did not get the air pressure he expected. It really sucks for my home inspector who apparently failed to find this.

I already contact Tarion, will keep you updated.

这回明白点儿了。

Return air通常是从一面内墙里走下来的，就是说把内墙当duct用。这样，内墙下面得封口，一般是在相邻的两个joists之间钉上铁皮，好让return air回到furnace去。楼主的房子，在做duct的时候，下面的两个joists之间漏掉了三尺长的铁皮，所以，走那一面墙的return air就回不到furnace里面，相关的房间没有足够的空气循环。不单如此，因为有那么大的一个洞，furnace还要从地下室抽气，其他地方的return air register也没有足够的吸力。整个ventilation system全乱套了。

楼主，是这么回事吗？

要是漏的地方不显眼，inspector还真不一定看得出来，除非他特别留意ventilation system。

这事儿对刚买了新房的朋友们，还真是个教训－－从搬进去开始，就得留心这房子，看有什么异常，比如heating cost偏高、个别房间里暖气不足等等，一条条记下来，待year end inspection的时候把这个list给inspector看看。Inspector有了这些hints之后，更容易找出那些难以发现的毛病。

还有duct cleaning。我曾听一个做HVAC的说，新房该做一次cleaning，因为里面有不少施工时候的灰尘，还可能有建筑垃圾。以后就不必做了，勤换换filter即可。我也不知道他说得对不对，可是从楼主的case看，新房做一下duct cleaning，除了清洁以外，也算是个检查。

You further explaination about joist liner is exactly what I mean, and accroding to HVAC, it's very common to miss some pipe here or there for a new home. Becareful new home owners!

From my experience, I strongly recommend doing a duct cleaning even before you moving into a new house, cause as you said there are tons of construnction dust in the heating/cooling system-behind your walls and in the pipes, and I have to admit I have taken a lot of dust during the past 4 years!!
