JDS Uniphase to cut Ottawa jobs

JDS Uniphase, which has been adding staff at its Ottawa operations in recent months, is now planning to reduce local employment levels in a bid to further cut costs and put an end to years of financial losses.

The moves are part of JDS' long-term plan to shift virtually all of its manufacturing work to lower-cost countries, especially in Asia. JDS expects to eliminate about 300 positions in Ottawa, reducing its local workforce to about 400 by the end of next year. Most of the cuts are planned for the second half of 2006.

At the peak of the tech boom, JDS employed 11,000 people locally before a massive downsizing cut the workforce to around 500. It has recently been hiring and increased its head count to more than 700.

Those who are left will be involved primarily in research and development. There will be some limited pre-manufacturing work and marketing operations.

JDS also plans to eliminate 125 jobs in Santa Rosa, Calif. and about 80 positions at a plant in Rochester, NY.

anyway it is much easy to find a job nowsday than the olddays

When were the old days? I'd say it is much harder to find a job nowadays than in the old days. :-)
