Union-City of Ottawa Reach Tentative Deal
Sunday, December 4, 2005

The wheels on the OC Transpo bus will continue to roll this week.

The City of Ottawa and the Amalgamated Transit Union have reached a tentative contract agreement, averting strike action on Monday.

The deal comes after six days of formal talks between the two sides.

Mayor Bob Chiarelli says both bargaining teams are recommending a contract to City Council and the ATU.

The main stumbling blocks in the negotiations had been wages, benefits and the contracting out of maintenance jobs for the O-Train.

The union representing OC Transpo drivers and mechanics had threatened to go on strike on Monday if a deal wasn't reached.

The Amalgamated Transit Union still has to have its members vote on the deal.

The new contract will have to be approved by city council and that is expected sometime next week.

Mayor Chiarelli says the deal is practical and reasonable for both sides. Chiarelli says the deal is within the budget envelop city staff were looking at during budget negotiations. He says there is always amounts in the budget that are projected for these types of deals.

The union says drivers and mechanics will continue their work to rule campaign this week but there won't be a strike on Monday
