Air Canada's regional airline Jazz is cutting up to nine per cent of its workforce in response to a drop in passenger traffic.
The company informed its staff that cuts would be made over the next few months, affecting up to 391 jobs.

"I deeply regret having to deliver this news," president Joseph Randell stated in the memo. "However, given the prevailing market conditions, it is imperative that we reduce staff surpluses. The fact of the matter is that we simply have too many people for the amount of flying we are projecting."

The airline has already cut 126 positions this year as traffic fell 30 per cent. Air Canada president and CEO officer Robert Milton has blamed the security surcharge and other fees for much of the fall off.

Jazz will attempt to make most of the cuts through leaves, job sharing and severance programs.

The airline recently cut some routes and plans to drop service to three cities in Atlantic Canada.
