• The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA Job Connect Program (Funded by the Government of Ontario):
How did I get a professional job at Ottawa in a short time
Time flies, I have been Canada for 4 months and started working about 1 month. Meanwhile I had same feeling of discomfort as most of new immigrants, and suffered pain when writing resume and preparing interview. At the beginning, I had no idea how to find a job in Canada, the free job hunting program given by Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre provided me great help during the time of my job hunting. Now I would like to share my job hunting experiences with you.
1. Resume is the key to an interview. Before I came to Canada, I have about 7 years working experiences in international companies, and I have been sent to US and Sweden for short time work as well. However, I have no idea how people write resume here in Canada, and it is difficult for me to highlight my strengths in my resume in English. After I took the class of resume writing in the free job hunting program, I knew I could use Qualification Highlights to highlight my strengths, and I tried to write my resume in the way I learned from class. But because I am not a native speaker, I still feel it is hard for me to write my resume briefly and effectively. The lecturer of the free job hunting program helped me to revise my resume, especially for the qualification highlights. The interview I got proved that my resume is successful, and in the interview notification, they said “After we went through your qualification highlights, we would like to give you an interview”.
2. Interview is a drama, and you have to prepare it very carefully. As to the interview, I was very nervous at the beginning, one reason is the language, I am not quite confident with my English. On the other hand, I have no idea what kind of questions will I be asked for. In the class of interview in the free job hunting program, I learned the general questions and answers. The last class is a mock interview, I didn’t think I had done a good job for the 10 minutes mock interview. From the video took for my mock interview, I saw myself too nervous and didn’t hit the right nail on the head when answering questions. After that, I did a lot of practices. Before my interview, I made an appointment with the expert of World Skills for one hour long mock interview. In the mock interview, I was asked a question how to keep your knowledge updated, and I didn’t answer it very well. I figured it out after the mock interview that I should give some famous journals in my working field. This question was asked in my interview, and I gave a perfect answer.
3. What else could help? The following gave me great help as well:
• University: I took a graduate level course in Carleton University. This gave a deep impression to the interviewers, and they may think I am a quite active person.
• Schoolmate reunion: in my university schoolmate reunion, I met one schoolmate to help me hand in my resume.
• The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA Job Connect Program (Funded by the Government of Ontario): They will assign a job counselor to you, and they can pay part of your salary in first several months to help you find a job. Part of my first several month salary was paid by them. I got this information from the free job hunting program.
When I was looking for a job, I heard many times that “looking for a job is a full-time job”. You persist in that, and with some good luck, your dream will become true. Hope my experiences are helpful, and good luck to everyone!
