I always use USPS for shipping any items from US. Bought quite a few lens from US and usually only charge with $5 fee at post office. Some times I even get lucky that they forgot to charge me taxes. Strongly suggest using USPS for your future purchase.
Yes, never use United Parcel Service (UPS). They're blood sucker. When I order something from US, I always advice the store to send through USPS instead or I'll refuse to pick up the package.
Brokerage fees is for handling and/or processing of your goods. They'll charge you this amount even if the shipping is local (within Ottawa, for example).
The custom didnt charge you canadian sales tax? how could that be?
Did you ask them to mark the item as gift?

As far as I know anything valued less than CAD$50 will not be taxed. I don't think it matters whether to mark the package as gift or not. They will check regardless.
On the other hand, I believe they don't check each and every item so some times it does get through without tax, e.g., bought a US$300 lens last time but strangely there is no tax.
Good luck and happy shopping. I'm waiting for a few packages from US in coming weeks.
