Dear International student,

Please note that the income tax presentation and free income tax clinic will be scheduled to take place next week. The College remains open during the strike. We highly suggest that you attend the income tax presentation or free clinic offered next week as this will help you understand the Canadian tax system and you will learn how it can benefit you. The income tax schedule is found at the bottom of this email.

If you were studying in the year 2005, you may have received a document sent out by your school confirming the tuition fees you paid for income tax purposes. This document is called a T2202A - Tuition and Education Amounts Certificate. This document is used for income tax purposes. For those of you who are not familiar with income tax, please visit the following web site for a more detailed description: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/home/income-e.html

If you were registered in a program at Algonquin College, worked on campus and/or completed a Co-op placement in the year 2005 (January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005), we invite you to attend an Income Tax Presentation on March 13, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in room T102B. A representative from the Ottawa Technology Centre will visit Algonquin College and will show you how to complete income tax.

This power point presentation will help you understand how to complete your income tax and it will give you the opportunity to learn how to prepare your own income tax for future tax years, should you remain in Canada.

In addition to the Income Tax Presentation, the Ottawa Technology Centre, will host an Income Tax Clinic on March 17th, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. in room B133. A representative from the Ottawa Technology Centre will be available to help International students complete their income tax on the spot. As it will take approximately 20 minutes per person, there may be a long wait time for this service. It is recommended that you come as early as possible for the income tax clinic.

If you plan to attend the Income Tax Presentation and/or the Income Tax Clinic, please bring with you:

T2202A - Tuition and Education Amounts Certificate
Rent receipts (if you have paid rent while in Canada)
If you worked on campus, or on a Co-op placement, you will require a T4 slip. These are provided to you by your employer. You should receive them by the end of February, 2006. If you worked on campus or in a Co-op placement, you will be asked for your Social Insurance Number. If you have not worked
If you are married or are in a common law relationship, your spouse is required to accompany you and your spouse must also bring their tax information as well.
If you do not bring with you the T2202A, the representative from the Ottawa Technology office will be unable to assist you.

In the event that you cannot attend the Income Tax Presentation on March 13th or the Income Tax Clinic on March 17th, you can visit the Community Volunteer income Tax Program offered at:

211 Bronson Avenue (Bronson Community Center)

Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

*** They will be closed on April 14th, 15th and 17th, 2006.

This free service will be available until April 29th, 2006.

Should you attend one of these free income tax clinics, be sure to bring with you your tuition and education amounts certificate (T2202A), proof of rent payments (if you want to claim rent) and a T4 slip (if you have worked on campus or on a Co-op placement). If you are married or are in a common law relationship, please ask your spouse to accompany you.

If have not yet received your tuition and education amounts certificate (T2202A) from Algonquin College, you can request this at the Finance office located in room C550 of the Woodroffe campus.

For any questions regarding International income tax, please call 1-800-267-5177 or visit the International Tax Services Office at 2204 Walkley Road, here in Ottawa.
If you would like to learn more about income tax, you can find more information at the following web site:

This is a special service and I encourage you to attend either the Income Tax Presentation or the Income Tax Clinic. By attending one of these sessions, any questions you may have about income tax will be answered.

Please note that we, in the International Education Centre, are unable to assist students with income tax questions.

We hope to see you on March 13th and/or on March 17th!
