A striking Toronto instructor was seriously injured Monday morning during a picket-line incident involving a car at the college's campus in Scarborough.
Investigators are trying to determine whether John Stammers, an instructor at the Centennial College's School of Business, was hit by the car or fell off it.
Stammers, 63, suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Toronto police said they would review security videotapes to sort out what happened.
"The investigation is ongoing," said Sgt. Brian Bowman told to CBC News. "We are looking at whether the victim jumped on the car."
Jacques O'Sullivan, chief steward for the Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 558, described Stammers as "a very meek and mild guy. He's an accounting guy."
Security officers from the college were present when the incident occurred, said college spokeswoman Rosanna Cavallaro, who added that the individuals in the vehicle "were not connected with Centennial College at all."
Cavallaro said the vehicle was on its way to the Scarborough Centre for Alternative Studies, a Toronto Board of Education program that rents space on the campus.
She added that security measures are being reviewed.
"We're looking at the situation very closely," Cavallaro said. "Safety is our top priority for all involved, so we are taking a look at the overall situation and whatever measures we can put in place to ensure this incident does not happen again."
Bowman called the incident "unfortunate."
"Emotions get the best of people, and emotions ran high during this incident," he said. "It escalated to the point where it ended up like that."
Instructors at Ontario's 24 community colleges began a legal strike on March 7 after reaching an impasse in contract negotiations.
