Re: Bob's RRSP. Can you fix it? Yes, we can!!!
Still a bit confused. There seems to be confusion over RRSP contribution Room v.s. actually RRSP contribution. Let's take an example for clarification.
Bob has his small business as a builder since 2003 and reports tax to CRA. Now he checked his Myaccount on CRA's website and here is the list of contribution limits of his RRSPs,
2003 contribution limit 1000
2004 contribution limit 1500
2005 contribution limit 3000
Bob didn't contribute any RRSP before 2005 and only bought $1500 in Jan 2006. And he plans to claim $1200 for tax year 2005 and carry over balance $300 for next year.
Now the question is,
1. Since Bob's 2005 contribution limit is $3000, that means he can only buy RRSP upto $3000. Is it possible to buy RRSP to his RRSP rooms in year 2003 and 2004? If yes, how? Or, is this how it works, he buys $2500 RRSP to use up the rooms in year 2003 & 2004, and still can buy up to $500 out of year 2005's room, then the 3000-500=2500 gets carried over to year 2006? Hate to see those RRSP rooms lapse......Anybody?
Now suppose, Bob didn't contribute any RRSP before 2005 and only bought $1500 in Jan 2006. And he plans to claim $1200 for tax year 2005 and carry over balance $300 for next year. I am pretty sure that this $300 will show up as your unused RRSP contribution. Please confirm.
Thanks.
