SS8 Networks slashes Ottawa workforce
By Leo Valiquette, Ottawa Business Journal

Telecom equipment maker SS8 Networks cut jobs across the organization on Friday, including up to half of its 80 workers in Ottawa.
The maker of intelligent network products for the major U.S. phone and telecom companies made the cuts in response to persistent weakness in the market as customers delay spending on upgrades.

"We're still a substantial company,?Rick Moran, chief information officer, said.

He would not confirm the extent of the cuts. The San Jose Calif.-based company employed more than 400 staff in a number of locations, including Shelton, Conn., Denver, Col., and overseas in the U.K., China and Malaysia.

SS8 CEO Grant Wakelin was confirmed to be in Ottawa on Friday as the local staff was given the bad news.

A source close to the company said the Ottawa cuts amount to half of the local workforce, reducing it to 40. About this time last year SS8 cut the local headcount to 80 from 100 when it acquired operations from Minnesota-based ADC Telecommunications Inc. for US$45 million in cash.

At the time Wakelin predicted the Ottawa operation would grow over the long term.

Moran stressed the company's commitment to Ottawa, saying it remains a key R&D centre for SS8's next generation of network products.

SS8 established its Ottawa office in June 2000 in a former bowling alley on March Road near the Alcatel Canada campus.
