Cable Modem 的问题

我家有Cable TV，昨日朋友拿来他的Cable Modem到我家，一插就能用来上网。我有两个问题：
1）我如果从商店买个MODEM，是否一般都能用。还是基本不能用。
2）如果能用，CABLE公司会发现吗？发现了我想可能罚款

his modem has an internal serial code that is recongnized at handshake, thus allocates him a valid IP

but you can buy certain model of the modem and modify it to remove the CAP on it, you get SUPER speed, but of course they can check you, but they will not because it is VERY unefficient to them to check individual customer and track net usage, just don't create a traffic jam or overload internet usage too much and they will let you go

actually my landlord's cable got disabled cuz of insanely pinging some weird address (he got a virus). So basically they do have scanners around
and the cap is on their side
