I had the same question when I wanted to buy a car. I did some research, and asked some friends who are working at Honda or Toyota. The result is : No big difference. But general speaking, Honda Civic more motivate, young people more like it, Toyota Corolla saves gas alittle more, most driving instructor use it. So, for me , finally I choice a Honda ? Civic Lx.
Civic use timing belt, needs to be replaced evey 100km. Corolla use timing chain does not need to be replaced.
Civic has a "interference" engine if the timing belt broken at high speed, the engine will be damaged. Corolla engine will not. It is a non interference engine.
Open the hood,Corolla has large open space around the engine. DIY is easy.
I like Civic very much but because above reasons. I intend to choose a Corolla.
Take a look at Toyota Matrix and Pontaic Vibe. They basically a Corolla Wagon. They share the same engine and tran with corolla. Very reliable. Vibe looks cool.
