It may not be necessary to add coolent. You can try to clean the filter, clean the vent/registers youself. You may get supprised result.
Usually, the filter should be cleaned every 1-2 months. My friend in Toronto got the same problem as yours (he never cleaned it for a few years). No everything is OK after he did as per my suggestion.
