Database Administrator (CADC)
CS-3

Background
The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) provides a number of publicly and internally accessed systems all of which are dependent upon the availability of relational databases. These systems form the basis of all our services and are accessed by clients throughout the world. Among the systems supported by this position are the Canadian Virtual Observatory, the archives for various telescopes (the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, the Gemini telescopes, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the Galactic Plane Survey), the Digitized Sky Survey 1 and 2, the CADC file management system and others. The responsibilities of the position are to insure the continuous availability of all these databases without the loss of service or data. The CADC's world reputation depends upon the correct operation of the databases supported by the database administrator.

Your Challenge
The successful candidate will be responsible for Database Administration (DBA) services for all Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS) software and associated data on multiple computing systems and architectures. Platforms currently include LINUX and Sun Solaris.
The incumbent will consult with the CADC Software Project Manager and Software Developers on the logical and physical design of new or revised applications employing RDBMSs and the ongoing use of existing applications. As such, he/she will:
1. Plan, implement, and monitor backup and recovery mechanisms to ensure physical data safety and integrity;
2. Monitor system performance and adjust system tuning parameters to ensure optimal performance and availability;
3. Plan and co-ordinate the installation of RDBMS software upgrades and new releases;
4. Negotiate with client application owners and System Developers on the introduction of new application releases, and plans and co-ordinates the installation of the changes;

5. Co-ordinate upgrades of computer system and network hardware and software with System Administrators and Network Analysts and work with System Developers to verify continued functionality of software and applications;

6. Co-ordinate and manage replication of databases with collaborating institutions.

Screening Criteria

Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field.

Experience
Several years of recent experience in the management of transaction based relational database systems on the UNIX operating system. Experience with working as part of a small to medium-sized development team. Experience in database modeling and design will also be considered an asset.

Technical Competencies
In-depth knowledge of relational database management systems technology, including highly detailed knowledge of Sybase ASE or IBM DB2 EEE RDBMS software.
In-depth knowledge of database backup and recovery methodologies specific to the RDBMS.
In-depth knowledge of UNIX operating systems on a variety of computer platforms, including programming languages, command scripting languages, and various layered software products.
A working knowledge of a variety of data communications technologies and network operating systems.
A general knowledge of data modeling, logical database design, physical database design, application development methodologies.
A general knowledge of database replication and database federation
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
Ability to transform technical concepts to a solid production/service basis.
Ability to analyze, research, identify, interpret complex issues.
Ability to continuously identify trends, update knowledge, and adapt to change.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a prolonged "multi-tasking" situation and under pressure.

The terminable allowance is in effect until 30 April 2003 or until such time as a new collective agreement for the bargaining unit is signed, whichever comes first.

Your Challenge
Reporting to the Software Project Manager, Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC), and working with one of the Senior Systems Analysts, CADC, the successful candidates will participate in any one of five current CADC activities:

The Gemini Telescopes Science Archive system; the Gemini Data Handling System (DHS) support; the Canadian Virtual Observatory project; the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey project (CFHLS);
CADC infrastructure support.

Responsibilities will include: designing and developing software; adapting or revising existing software; designing and creating associated database structures; testing and documenting all software produced; and performing other related duties.

Screening Criteria

Education

Technical Competencies
A good knowledge of the UNIX operating system (preferably Sun Solaris or Red Hat Linux). A good knowledge of a relational database management system (preferably SYBASE Adaptive Server Enterprise), SQL and database application programming. Familiarity with UNIX-based software design and development tools. Working knowledge of software engineering practices.
Demonstrated ability in software engineering and programming. Ability to work well in a small programming group and to work independently. Ability to utilize various CASE tools. Ability to learn new systems.

Java Programmer (Competition 40-02-22A)

Good knowledge of the Java programming language is required.
Knowledge in one of the following areas will be considered an asset:
・ Distributed computing: Jini and JavaSpaces; Web application development: XHTML+CSS, Servlets, JSPs, XML, protocols, security;

・ Other database technology: PostgreSQL or DB2.

C/C++ Programmer (Competition 40-02-22B)

Good knowledge of the C and/or C++ programming language is required.
Knowledge in one of the following areas will be considered an asset:
・ Multi-threaded programming;

Your Challenge
Reporting to the Software Project Manager, Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC), the successful candidate will design, develop and implement data handling and archiving software systems for a world-class scientific archiving centre. He/she will be responsible for the software analysis, design and development effort for the Gemini Telescopes Science Archive project at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (HIA)'s Canadian Astronomy Data Centre.

Screening Criteria

Experience
