OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced that the first Universal Child Care Benefit cheques have been mailed and that families across Canada should start receiving them this week.
"Families will be able to use the Universal Child Care Benefit to help their children as they see fit," said Minister Finley. "For some parents, this might mean using the benefit to pay part of their child care fees. A parent who stays at home may want to use it on a preschool program or for occasional care by a friend or neighbour."
The Universal Child Care Benefit is a new form of direct financial assistance that provides families with resources to support child care choices. It will be paid to families in monthly instalments of $100 per child under the age of six.
Over 90 percent of Canadian families will receive the Universal Child Care Benefit automatically, as they are currently registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit. Families who have not yet applied for the Universal Child Care Benefit can do so by submitting a completed Canada Child Tax Benefit application to the Canada Revenue Agency. They will have up to 11 months to apply to obtain retroactive payments to July 2006.
Applications are available on the Canada Revenue Agency Web site at www.cra arc.gc.ca, by calling 1 800 959 2221, or by visiting a Service Canada Centre.
Canadians are encouraged to spread the word on the Universal Child Care Benefit to family and friends. Look for more information on www.universalchildcare.ca, or subscribe through the Web site to receive regular updates.
