A Comair flight crashed not long after leaving the runway at a Kentucky airport Sunday morning and burst into flame, killing 49 people and leaving the sole survivor in critical condition.

Two Canadians were among the dead, the Department of External Affairs said. The names have not been released and next of kin are being informed, a spokeswoman said.

The crash, which occurred at about 6:07 a.m. ET after the jet took off from Lexington's Bluegrass Airport, was the worst airplane accident in the United States in nearly five years.

Officials from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said they weren't immediately sure what caused the Comair Flight 5191 to go down in a hilly, wooded area after it departed for Atlanta. Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the crash site.

The plane remained largely intact, but emergency workers said the flames were so intense that they were only able to remove one crewmember alive.

"They were taking off, so I'm sure they had a lot of fuel on board," Fayette County coroner Gary Ginn told reporters. "Most of the injuries are going to be due to fire-related deaths."

The CRJ-100 regional jet was carrying 47 passengers and three crewmembers, said Kathleen Bergen, an FAA spokeswoman.

The survivor, who is believed to be the flight's first officer, was in critical condition at the University of Kentucky hospital, hospital spokesman Jay Blanton said.

Comair, a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, is based in the Cincinnati suburb of Erlanger, Ky.

The Bombardier Canadair CRJ-100, which was built in Canada, is a twin-engine aircraft that can carry up to 50 passengers, according to Delta's web site.

End to safest period in aviation history

The crash marks the end of what has been called the safest period in U.S. aviation history.

There has not been a major crash since Nov. 12, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 587 plunged into a residential neighbourhood in Queens, N.Y., killing 265 people, including five on the ground.

On Jan. 8, 2003, an Air Midwest commuter plane crashed on takeoff at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., killing all 21 aboard.

In December 2005, a seaplane operated by Chalk's Ocean Airways crashed off Miami Beach when its right wing separated from the fuselage shortly after takeoff, killing the 18 passengers and two crew members.

That plane, a Grumman G-73 Turbo Mallard, was built in 1947 and modified significantly in 1979.
