1. For the wages of sin is death
In what way are “wages” different from a “gift”?
What other “wages” does sin pay?
What is meant here by “death” ? physical death? Spiritual death?
Who does this apply to?
2. But the gift of God is eternal life
If someone gave you a box of chocolates for your birthday, and you accepted the box, and then took out your wallet and paid them $20, would it still be a gift?
Why is eternal life a gift, rather than something we earn?
Who can receive this gift?
3. Through Jesus Christ our Lord
How is God able to make this gift available to us?
This verse tells us of:
Two Masters
Two Methods
Two Outcomes
Summary:
This verse explains why the world is so full of problems ? this is all the result of sin. Sin began in the Garden of Eden with one act of disobedience. From there it has infected all of the human race. We are all sinners, whether we like to admit it or not. We are actually in service to sin ? we are slaves to sin. People discover this when they try and stop sinning on their own ? they find out that they cannot.
Sin has terrible consequences ? it pays wages. Those wages are death ? physical death, and spiritual death. Every time you drive by a cemetery it is a reminder that “the wages of sin is death”. But spiritual death ? separation from God forever is much more serious. If we die as sinners, then we will experience spiritual death ? separation from God forever.
God does not want that to happen. So that is why he sent Jesus to be the Saviour ? in order that through Him, we can receive the gift of God ? eternal life.
But just as a gift cannot be forced upon someone, but must be freely received, so God does not force the gift of His Son upon us ? He makes this gift freely available to us, and then invites us to receive Christ. Those who have received the gift are called Christians. They have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, and they know that they have eternal life.
