According to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (www.icpi.org - the interlocking pavement's official organization), "Specifications typically used by cities, states, or provinces for aggregate base materials under flexible asphalt pavements are adequate for interlocking concrete pavements. "
My understanding is if the sub-base is good for your asphalt driveway then it should be good enough ("adequate") for your interlocking driveway.
If any one of you have done your interlock driveway, could you tell me if your contractor has re-done your sub-base?
I saw most of contractors have replaced the sub-base and I am just wondering if it's a total waste according to ICPI's specification?
Or further more, if any one of you have done your interlock driveway yourself?
I've done my patio and my walk so I'd like to share/exchange the experience if you are interested.

Thanks a lot, Country on Wheel!
I assume you didn't redo your sub-base for your old part of driveway?
If so, it sounds very encouraging to my theory.
Thanks again.

You are right. I did not redo my sub-base for the old part, just add a thin layer of sand to make the driveway up a little (since its sinking). Also I want to say that even there is an ink for the new stone/brick after heavy raining, but it would be disappeared totally at the next day, still looking very pretty. Good luck!

Please DO! Thanks.

OK, I'll start it first.
We've built patio ourselves many years ago.
It's a 14 x 16 project.
We almost spent the same amount of time in the design stage as for the real project.
After so many drawings and careful planning/calculating, the following is what we did.
1. remove grass and dirt and dig down about 8" deep.
2. put about 4 inches thick of gravel and then 1"+ inch thick of stone dust and tamp the sub-base firmly and it's nice to have gentle slope(the near side is about 1" or 2" higher).
3. put a thin layer of sand and use a long wooden stick to level the base.
4. start to lay the patio stone from one corner until all the stone is in place(stone cutting may be necessary). You may use rubber hammer to tamp the patio stones.
5. spread a very thin layer of sand and sweep it in to the edge/gap of the patio stones.
6. water the newly built patio.
You may repeat the step 5 and 6 several times until all the gap is filled.
You may use stone dust to replace the sand. The difference is if you use sand, it'll be esier to fix the patio later; if you use stone dust, it'll be more secure.
