City Council approves revised North-South Light Rail project
City Council has approved a new plan for the North-South Light Rail Transit project, with electric Light Rail train service running from LeBreton Flats to Barrhaven Town Centre. The planned downtown portion of the project east of LeBreton Flats to the University of Ottawa will not proceed at this time.
Instead, Council has requested that the City undertake an in-depth study of a tunnel option for the downtown core, along with upgrades to streetscaping on Albert and Slater streets. The Environmental Assessment study is expected to take two to four years and will provide opportunities for residents and businesses to review the new plans and provide input.
Under the new North-South Light Rail Transit project plan, a major transfer station will be built at LeBreton Flats, providing a connection point for both light rail and bus commuters. Frequent bus service will run from LeBreton station through the downtown core along Albert and Slater streets. The revised plan upholds the original commitment to construct the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge.
Monies saved from the modified scope of the project will be redirected to advance other transit priorities, serving residents in the East and West. This includes:
The Cumberland Transitway to Blackburn Hamlet (East)
The West Transitway from Bayshore to Moodie (West)
Extending Bus Rapid Transit service along Innes Road to Blair Road, connecting to Blair Station, with the objective of continuing to Downtown.
A report on these activities will be brought to Committee and Council in early 2007.
Construction on the revised North-South Light Rail Transit project will start in early 2007. The new North-South line is expected to be ready for passengers in 2010.
