Library Settlement Worker
Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre is a non-profit, non-partisan charitable organization committed to advancing the full social and economic integration of newcomers into the main stream society in the Ottawa-Carleton Region.
Position Type: Settlement Worker
Employment Status: This is a full time contract (35 hours/week)
Term: January 2007 - March 31, 2007 (with the possibility of an extension)
Responsibilities:
•Provide settlement counseling to newcomers and their families who experience difficulties in settlement and integration.
•Develop and implement new initiatives to promote informed participation from newcomer families.
•Provide interpretation to facilitate newcomers’ access to services.
•Collaborate with library staff to facilitate constructive and culturally sensitive links between the newcomer students and their families.
•Actively engage in outreach settlement programs and activities to newcomers who face barriers in accessing our services.
•Refer clients to community resources and plan and organize information workshops as needed by the community.
•Prepare and submit statistical reports as required.
•Attend and participate in agency staff and team meetings.
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
Key Qualifications:
•Post Secondary Education: BSW or College Diploma in Social Work, or related experience.
•Fluency in English, Cantonese or Mandarin is essential.
•Proven experience working in settlement or community work.
•Proven knowledge of the social and resource systems and structures.
•Ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Computer Literate (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and willing to learn internal database

•Direct clients to appropriate services/workers: e.g. ISAP worker, LINC Coordinators, JSW worker or Counselling worker
•Sorts incoming mail and processes outgoing mail
•Provide front line support and directs office traffic
•Maintain a neat reception area and front desk
•Manage waiting area / resource room
•Performs other clerical duties as required
Key Qualifications:
•Two years related work experience
•Spoken and written Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) and English language skill essential.
•Ability to exercise good judgment and tact in dealing with clients
•Highly organized, attentive to detail; good time management skills
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
