Snowy welcome for returning March break travellers
BRODIE FENLON
Globe and Mail Update
Mother nature has put out a wintry welcome mat for March break travellers returning to eastern Canada this weekend as a late-season storm blows up from the eastern U.S. seaboard.
Heavy snowfall and high winds are forecast for eastern Ontario and southern Québec, with ice pellets, freezing rain and rain expected in New Brunswick.
The storm, which was tracking north from Long Island Saturday morning, is expected to dump up 20-40 centimetres of snow in eastern Canada. Hundreds of flights out of New York, Boston and Washington have been cancelled, and similar delays are expected at Canadian airports.
Four deaths in the New Jersey area are being attributed to the treacherous driving conditions caused by the wintry blast.

In Ontario, provincial police reported more than 300 collisions since 7 p.m. Friday. The heaviest hit area in Ontario will be a stretch along Lake Ontario from the Niagara Peninsula through to Kingston and Cornwall.
Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for the eastern half of Ontario, much of Quebec along the St. Lawrence seaway, and the entire province of New Brunswick. The forecast calls for whiteout conditions in southern Quebec, and heavy rains Saturday night in New Brunswick.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said more than 1,400 flights were cancelled Friday at the region's three major airports because of the storm. Delays also were reported at airports in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore-Washington and Boston.
