I believe you are talking about "Tax Freedom Day". It does not mean you do not need to pay tax that day.Tax Freedom Day is the first day of the year in which a nation as a whole has theoretically earned enough income to fund its annual tax burde(http://en.wikipedia.org/). All money earned prior to Tax Freedom Day goes to one of three levels of government: federal, provincial, or local.only after that day, people start working for themselves.In Canada, Tax Freedom Day is calculated by the Fraser Institute. Last year's TFD is June 19th.

Some stores can offer discount equivalent to the GST + PST (14% in Ontario). They can do it in any day of the year, and they can do it for more than one day in any given year.
