A man whose home was destroyed in one of two alleged arsons in Ottawa early Thursday morning said he believes the fire was set in revenge after he called the police to report being harassed by a group of young men.
Andy Poirier told CBC News Thursday that the young men took over his townhouse on Dumaurier Avenue in the city's west end whenever they pleased, whether by forcing their way past him or breaking in, and had threatened to burn down his house if he ever called police.
On Wednesday, he did call police from a location away from his home.
Police confirmed that, but said Poirier was not home when they arrived and therefore they were unable to record an official complaint.
When Poirier returned home Thursday morning, his house had burned to a blackened mess.
Police were called to the fire at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and they estimate it caused $100,000 in damage.
