Carleton University will remain open despite the strike action
announced by CUPE 2424, the Carleton University Support Staff
Association.

Negotiations between the University and CUPE 2424 broke down early
Wednesday morning when parties failed to reach a settlement during
mediation. CUPE is in a legal strike position as of today, and has
indicated that it intends to advise its members to strike today. There
will be pickets at both entrances to campus starting at 6:00 a.m.
beginning Wednesday morning.

In brief, the University's proposal when talks broke down was for a
three (3) year agreement with salary increases of 3% in each of the
three years; improvements to the dental and vision care benefit plans,
in addition to other important changes.

"We are extremely disappointed that the union rejected what we consider
to be a very competitive and fair offer," says Stephen Green, Chief
Negotiator for the University."

Classes will be offered as scheduled. All students are expected to
report for their classes. There may be some disruptions to biology,
chemistry and physics, engineering and other labs. Notices will be
posted on the University web site in the event of any disruptions or
cancellations.

University departments and services will continue to function. The
library will be open and residence, conference and dining services will
also continue to operate.

Any changes to normal operations and updated information regarding the
status of the negotiations will be posted on the University web site
www.carleton.ca and communicated to the University community and
students through email and Today@Carleton.
