Travel in New Zealand, any tips?

Is there anybody come from New Zealand or have been there? Even after reading the Lonely Planet New Zealand, I still have something confused. For example, from Tongariro National Park to Wellington, Google said 4 and half hours is enough, but my friend told me at least 6 to 7 hours. Which one is correct? Is that because of the bad road condition which streches the driving time?

To the National Park Village, 5 hours pretty enough.
