想问有没有算过这个帐,自己买地自己建房的话大概能省多少钱?自己买地请人建房的话大概又能省多少钱?

不过市政府专管房屋审批的那位大哥在不了解我实力前,劝告我不要试,他以前也打算,但是鉴于看到听到本地CONTRACTOR的问题比较多,就取消了.他原话"何况你这外来的!"

I have a friend, she built a house by herself. Her budget is $400k, after she finished her house, she cost $900k. More than double price. If you have big money, you can try. In north America, customer design is always much more expensive.
 
I agree with "Builder Xiao Chen". It totally depends on your SKILLS. If you know nothing about how to build a house. Just do not try it.

I have a colleage he used to be a plumer and he has lots of friends are working as house building contractors. He only spends $250K to build a huge bunglow near baseline/woodroffe. He said he saved at least $300K. But he is an exceptional since he and his friends are pro on building. It may just gives you some ideas.
 
Another way is a modular home. They will build a house in factory and move it to site and put few large pieces togather.
 
I feel that most important things people have to consider are:

1. how much does the house worth?
If the house will worth around 300k and if you know nothing about how to build a house, I would say you won't save nothing on it.

If the house will worth around at least 500k and even you don't know anything of building a house and hire a company to do it for you, it is possible that you can save some money. If the house will worth around 800k to 1000k, it is more possible that you can save a lot.

2. you own opportunity cost

Calculate your own earnings if don't build by yourself, in other words, calculate your own opportunity cost.

3. Why most people choose to buy directly instead of building by themselves (or hiring others to build)?

Think about it! Spending $60 , people can buy a pair of shoes, but if one choose to make a pair of similar shoes by themselves, it may cost them more.....(main reason is minimum wage in Canada: $8/per hour!)

I don't follow. If the house is more luxury, DIY will save more even though you can screw up, you mean? Any re-work is costly I believe.
