Did you receive interest on your last month's rent deposit?
We have been getting many reports of bad landlords who are falsely claiming they no longer have to pay interest on your last month's rent deposit, because of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, Ontario.
If this has happened to you write a letter to your landlord to inform them they are wrong and that they do owe you this money. Keep two copies of this letter, one for your records and one for further use. If they still won't pay you the interest they owe, then your landlord is violating the law and you should contact the Investigation and Enforcement Unit, (IEU,) of the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing at 416-585-7214, or outside of the 416 calling area, toll free at 1-888-772-9277 to report this violation. Fines for violations are up to $25,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations. For more information you can click on Interest on Last Month's Rent Deposit.
