CTV Ottawa- Hwy. 417 slowdowns won't end until Tuesday - CTV News, Shows and Sports -- Canadian Television. 417 slowdowns won't end until TuesdayUpdated: Mon Apr. 28 2008 18:05:32ctvottawa.caCommuters who take Highway 417 from south to east Ottawa are being told they won't get relief until late Tuesday. The commute to and from work was slower than usual on Monday after a nine-kilometre stretch of the highway's westbound lanes was closed between Boundary and Anderson roads. The stretch of the highway has been partially closed since Friday and was fully closed Sunday, causing traffic backups to Embrun after flooding eroded the roadway and caused a partial collapse. Officials say the decision to close the highway was made after a culvert or pipeline meant to divert runoff from the highway started to erode. "Throughout the weekend with the rain over Saturday, the deterioration just started to quickly happen and so we made the decision to close both lanes," said Brandy Duhaime, spokesperson for the Ontario Transportation Ministry. Officials say the roadway won't be reopened until new drainage piping is installed on Tuesday. Detour causes delays A detour has been set up in the meantime, guiding motorists along Anderson Road and then back onto the highway, causing commuter pain for many. Motorists told CTV News the delay put them between an hour and an hour and a half behind schedule. "We're wasting about an hour, an hour and a half, maybe two hours," said one driver. "I'm babysitting my grandson so I'm going to be late," said another. The delays are not just costing valuable time; they're also costing companies money. "It costs us about $200-300 for the day," said transport driver Michel Charlebois. Erosion happened despite precautions The transportation ministry says the erosion and partial collapse of the highway happened despite daily maintenance surveys by the ministry. "The hole that was being formed was being done underneath the highway, so it was not visible underneath the surface. So, we really couldn't see it until there was a dip," said Duhaime. Thanks!

"the highway's westbound lanes was closed between Boundary and Anderson roads."

Not too bad if we don't go to Montreal or come to work from further east along that road.
