In today's World at Six news story of the China earthquake, May 16 2008, CBC China correspondent Anthony Germain said as many as 7000 schools were crumbled in the earthquake and it is the corruption of Chinese government who is responsible for the collapse and that people were angry at the government. I am wondering where his number was coming from as I have searched through the Chinese Internet bbs and news media and nowhere can I find any statistics on the number of collapsed schools. Let's assume his number is true for a moment. Assume each school has 500 students which is very small based on my personal experience in China. Let's also assume only 20 percent of the students had died from a crumbled school which is a miracle since the earthquake struck during the school hour. Then just the student casualty would be mounting to 700,000. Obviously what Mr. Germain said is nowhere close to truth.
I am a daily CBC radio listener. I have listened to Mr. Germain's previous stories on China. I am afraid I can hardly get an objective, balanced view from his reports. All I heard were smeared pictures of the Beijing Olympic game and the China's birth control policy, biased stories on the recent riot in Lhasa, and the Falungong follower's propaganda.
After the earthquake, the Chinese public used the Internet and expressed great sadness over the mounting loss of lives and the extent of the devastation brought by the disaster. There were also overwhelming stories on how resilient and brave the people were at the moment when the disaster struck and in helping each other out of danger. People have shown sincere admiration at the swift reaction and handling of the aftermath rescue by the government and the army. There is over-pouring of care and eagerness of how everyone can reach out and help the earthquake survivors. Compared with how the hurricane Katrina was handled by the US government and its power and wealth in the world, the Chinese government does not lose a single point.
Of course I won't get any senses of the above from Mr. Germain's report. I really hope CBC have a serious look at Mr. Germain's competence as a China correspondent. What ever he said will not slow down China a second in its rescue and recovery effort. It is the Canadian public who will fall to the victims as they can only hear what Mr. Germain feeds them, making people frogs living at the bottom of a well only knowing the small piece of sky from the opening.
