Cyclist killed in collision with opening car door

Published: Saturday, May 24, 2008

TORONTO -- A cyclist was killed Thursday after he ran into the opening door of a parked car, lost control of his bike and fell into the path of a cube van.

The man, 57, was travelling east on Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, just west of Avenue Road at about 1:12 p.m. Thursday, Toronto police said.

''As he passed in front of number 363 Eglinton Ave. W., the occupant of a parked Volvo opened the driver's side door.

The cyclist made contact with the car door and lost control of his bicycle,'' police said in a release. 'As a result, he fell onto the roadway and was struck by . . . a 1997 Ford cube van.''

Door Prize

A driver opens a door into you or your path.

How bikes can avoid this collision:

Ride to the left. Give enough space so that you won't run into opened doors. You may be concerned that cars can't pass you easily, and you should weigh this concern against the probability of being "doored" by a parked car if you ride too close to it.

Slow down. If you are passing a row of parked cars you should be wary of door being opened. Slow down so that you can stop quickly.

Scan ahead.
Look for people inside parked vehicles. Exercise caution if someone is present.

Watch for Cyclists

Driving a car is a full-time job!

It is your job to be a responsible driver. Before you open your door – LOOK.

Look behind you – is there a cyclist approaching?

Opening your door into a cyclist’s path is a traffic violation. It is much worse than that for the cyclist who comes into contact with your open door. No bike and no cyclist can withstand that sudden stop – the human body wants to keep moving until it hits something solid. That could be the road surface, your door or your car window.

You would be responsible for injuring someone, maybe seriously, maybe even fatally. That though should be enough to remind you to LOOK before you open the door.

Carling Ave.
