You shouldn't have problems with your patio slab, provided you have a solid fundation. I did my backyard 4 years ago. The patio slabs are all even and still look good (see picture).

No, I didn't dig that deep at all. Personally I think 8" is over-kill. I just removed the sod, flated the soil surface, and then packed it before puting 2-3" crush stone. It seems it works for my case as I haven't seen any movements of these patio slabs in the last 4 years. Good luck if you are doing yours.

I heard the brick on the ground will not be flat after one frozen season. Please keep us posted how your patio look after winter. We are all learning from each other's experience.
