Canadians get a little longer than usual to make registered retirement savings plan investments eligible for the 2002 tax year. The deadline has been extended to March 3.

Because the usual March 1 deadline falls on Saturday, people will have until midnight of the following Monday to make RRSP investments deductible against 2002 income taxes, spokeswoman Colette Gentes-Hawn of Canada Customs and Revenue Agency said yesterday.

Normally, the RRSP deadline is 60 days from the end of the year.

Taxpayers have several ways to check to find out how much can be contributed to their RRSPs. Limits take into account earnings offset by the value of any company pension plan contributions they might make.

Unused contribution room since 1991 can be carried forward to increase future contribution amounts.

Notices of assessment taxfilers should have received from CCRA after filing their income tax returns last year should include a notice of total RRSP contribution room for this year.

Further information is available from CCRA's tax information phone service or Web site through April 30th.

The toll-free number is 1-800-267-6999. The internet address is www.ccra.gc.ca/tips.
