Employment Trends: Translators, Interpreters

The region boasts approximately 1295 workers for this group of which 1215 are active in the labour force. About 66% of these professionals are women. The unemployment rate for this occupation (3.3%) is below that of all occupations (5.8%). (Source: Statistics Canada, 2001 Census, Ottawa HRCC Service Area)

The growing use of the Internet, the advent of e-commerce and the opening of international markets have added new requirements as far as the knowledge of at least one other foreign language beyond the official languages is concerned. In addition, the Internet provides access to foreign service providers, a tendency which has increased and redefined competition for this occupational group.

The demand for this occupational group should be equal to the average of all occupational groups for the next few years. Demand will remain stable as workers who retire from the field are replaced.

Salary: The work is on a per-contract basis and the remuneration is $25.00/hr.
