Any suggestion or comments on this offer:
NRC, Technical Officer, 3 year term, ~ 45K/year, for a newly graduated Ph.D. in chemistry.

No career plan to be in academics. But, currently have a conditional offer in academics with similar pay. Would prefer to working in industry or government. Any advise on negotiating the salary? Many thanks!

I think it depends on what your plan for the future is. Do you want to work as a scientist in a company / government institution, or as a technical staff? If the first one is your choice, you may want to look for an RA/post doc position in NRC, company or university. If you take this technician position, it may not be good for you if you want to pursue a higher level career in the future.

"No career plan to be in academics"

Take it! For NRC 3 three terms basically is guarantee for permanent. If you don’t, you would be better move to US for chemistry job. There would be very little job for you in Ottawa.

You may ask for the highest of pay in you level and classification. Don't ask higher leverl, they can't give it you if they don't have the postiton.

Applied Science and Patent Examination (SP) - Part 9 of 20

The salary is not high although I do not know the average salary for a new Ph.D. graduate. As I know, Nortel will pay about $50,000 for new computer science undergraduate. However, I also know there are some benefits in NRC and your salary may go up a little bit faster than in private companies. If you go to USA, you may get much higher salary.
If you are lucky in getting into oil companies, you may be able to get $100,000.

It is very hard (I mean very) to have a career in industry (especially in IT), you can find a decent job (I mean job) with decent pay in the first few years compared with those guys struggling in academic. Then what?

Think twice...

I had been there, done that - this is just my two cents.

I often suggest to new graduate not worry about the starting salary. If you like the job/career, take it. If you like the employer/institution/company, take it. You have a ton of chances to move around inside, better than waiting outside. I know a fresh bachelor started at $60,000, but also know someone starting at low $35,000, but double in 5 years, and triple in 7 years. If you believe your ability, the start salary is not very important. To an immigrant, the first job is most difficult one to be landed, especially at the current economic condition. Good luck!

I do the same to others and I'd agree no more.

Well, by the way, in the current circumstances I am not sure if it is still eary to find a job with higher pay in the USA.

Really appreciate all of comments and suggestions!

Really appreciate all of you. I would play a little bit negotiation and see what I can do.
Thanks again.
