January 26, 2009 marks the beginning of the Chinese Luna New Year of the Ox. To add to the New Year festivities, the Jiangsu Folk Dance Troupe will make a five-city tour of Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax,
Calgary, and Edmonton. The tour premiers in Ottawa on February 4th 2009.

The dance troupe, in its more than 50 years of history, is a unique presenter of the best folk dance and music traditions the Yangtzhe Delta has to offer. Today it houses a formidable group of talents. The
troupe has toured all over China and visited numerous countries on all continents in recent years.

One of its best dramatic dances is the story of a love triangle – Xi Shi. A segment of the dramatic dance will be performed in Ottawa. Xi Shi, the title character and the classical embodiment of the Oriental
beauty, is torn between personal happiness and duty to country. The complete dramatic dance of Xi Shi will return to the stage of the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the most prestigious theatre built in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics, right after the five-city Canada tour.

There are 14 other pieces of dances and songs that best represent the folk traditions, including segments from the award-winning dramatic dances of A-Bing and Red River Valley. The audience will recognize
some of the timeless classics and news pieces deeply rooted in thousands of years of culture.

The Chinese New Year Music and Dance Show by the Jiangsu Folk Dance Troupe will be presented at the Adult High School (300 Rochester Street) at 6:30 pm on February 4th. Tickets are available from ticketing
outlets, at $15, $20 and $38 per person. For further information, please telephone: 613-232-8403, or 613-224-5573.
