Midwifery Event in Ottawa
The event will be held in Ottawa on Thursday February12, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Penthouse (17th floor) at the Sheraton Ottawa Hotel at 150 Albert Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
On behalf of the National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO), it is with great pleasure that I extend this invitation to you to attend a special event entitled Celebrating Birth: First Nations, Inuit and Métis Approaches to Child and Maternal Care. At this event, NAHO will celebrate traditional Aboriginal midwifery by: announcing our acceptance to be the new home for the “Canadian and American Traditional Midwives Blanket” and launching a selection of NAHO’s new midwifery, child and maternal health resources.
In May 2008, at the Invitational Gathering on Indigenous Birthing and Midwifery held in Washington, DC, hosted by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Martha Grieg, a traditional midwife and Inuit Elder accepted this blanket on behalf of all traditional Canadian and American traditional midwives. Health Canada honoured NAHO by inviting us to house and display this important symbol of traditional Indigenous birthing practices.
NAHO is delighted to showcase the “Canadian and American Traditional Midwives Blanket” in our reception area for all to see. It is a reminder that this is one way First Nations, Inuit, and Métis can bring new life to traditional midwifery practices which celebrate the gift of birth surrounded by families within their home communities.
I look forward to seeing you at this exciting initiative. Your involvement in this event will help to increase awareness of NAHO’s on-going efforts in addressing the health and well-being of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities. Together, we can make a meaningful difference.

To RSVP or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to me by electronic mail or by telephone.
