Dear Sir/Madam,
As an employed professional who immigrated to Canada from China, you are invited to participate in a focus group discussion to help build training tools for employers to who want to tap into the talent that their highly skilled immigrant employees bring to the workplace. The project is being led by Dr. Linda Manning, in partnership with a number of immigrant-serving agencies, government agencies, and business associations. Canadian Integration Services and Training is an important partner, and Gabriela Lopez, Vice President, will be the facilitator.
The training tools will be on-line, interactive and experiential, designed for managers, human resource (HR) practitioners, and immigrant employees alike to understand how management practices can unintentionally create barriers for immigrant employees for promotion and career advancement. This innovative on-line tool will be easy-to-implement and relevant for managers and employees working in small and medium-size organizations.
To date, several focus groups have been conducted by Linda Manning with HR practitioners and highly skilled immigrants to identify the practices that may be limiting the advancement of highly skilled immigrants. Performance evaluation and internal selection and promotion practices were identified as the key areas. These focus groups were followed by a series of workshops conducted by Alice Kubicek to identify workplace situations that illustrate how unintended bias in HR practices might create barriers.
Armed with these situations, we invite you to help us identify the immigrant perspective, which will inform the training modules and make them real. We are looking for 12 employed, highly skilled Chinese immigrants with at least 2 years of Canadian workplace experience to participate for 3 hours. Transportation expenses will be reimbursed, and meals will be provided.
· Date: February 18th, 2009
· Place: 303 Moodie Drive Suite 210, Ottawa. ON K2H 9R4 (Integration Resources Canada Inc.)
· Time: 9:00 to 12:00 (Lunch will be provide after the session)
· Language: English
· Please confirm your participation before Monday February 16th, 2009 with Gabriela Lopez at 613-321-2483 or by email at gabriela.lopez07@gmail.com
Participants will be engaged in a structured exercise to identify their response to specific situations, how the practice might be adapted to increase positive responses, and to help the researchers identify how cultural differences play a role in the effectiveness of business practices.
You can get more information about the initiative through Dr. Manning at 613-562-5800 x3806 or at leadershipdiversity@uottawa.ca
