OC Transpo hopes the city's new transit incentives will bring its ridership back. Ottawa city councillors sat down for a long debate Wednesday to finalize their plan to get riders back on the buses.
In the end, council approved a $10-million incentive package, which it hopes will lure riders back to OC Transpo, along with much-needed revenue.
According to Alain Mercier, the head of OC Transpo, the transit company has rolled back on to Ottawa's roads with a $13.4-million deficit.
OC Transpo's 51-day strike ended Jan. 29.
But now, says the city, in order for the transit company to recover, everyone has to be willing to go along for the ride.
"Well, everyone put something in, there was a compromise," said Alex Cullen, the chair of the city's transit committee.
Now, he says, the city can concentrate on bringing the city's transit services up to full operation.
For bus pass holders:
- Those who have a December pass will be able to purchase a March pass at a discount of 60 per cent.
- April and May Express bus passes will be sold to Express pass holders at the price of a regular pass.
- Ecopass holders will eventually be given a break from their payroll deductions that will equal the benefit other pass holders have been given.
For cash and ticket holders:
- Fares will be cut in half until the end of February.
The city's original motions had called for more than $13 million in incentives, which were hotly debated.
Many councillors said they were worried that the city wouldn't be able to afford to pay for the incentives.
Mayor Larry O'Brien said, however, that $ 7.6 million comes from riders who have already paid for services they didn't receive.
That means that the approved $10 million package will only cost the city another $2.4 million from its transit fund.
Council approved the incentive package unanimously, but with the option to reconsider the incentives again in two weeks.
