What’s so funny?

Are any of us as smart as we would like to be? Probably not. But we can feel a whole lot smarter when we exaggerate the stupidity of others. It’s harmless fun, too.


Unless we are born rich, we all have to face the problem of earning a living. A person who is happy at the work he or she does is considered very lucky. Today, modern technology and labor-saving devices make life a lot easier for most. We have many hours for leisure activities, such as sports, games, TV, and traveling. Work and laziness, bosses and employees have become the butts of jokes.

Boss:
The other workers are carrying fifty pounds of stuff on each trip and you’re carrying only twenty-five. How do you explain that?
Worker:
Oh, they’re just too lazy to make two trips, the way I do.



College life brings intellectual challenges, social opportunities and tension. Students have to adjust to life in a dormitory, and share quarters with a roommate. Grades must be kept up: there is the daily grind of attending classes that are not always interesting, researching endless term papers, and cramming for exams. There are all anxiety-provoking experiences.

A star football player flunked his math course. The coach was very upset and went to the professor to beg him to give the boy another chance. Finally the professor agreed to a special exam. When it was over and the professor had corrected the test, the coach asked, “Well, how did he do?” “He flunked again. It looks hopeless.” The professor showed the coach the paper. “Look at this –6x7 = 45.” “Oh, gee whiz, prof,” said the coach. “Give him a break. He only missed it by one.”
