I just want to know if possible the City of Ottawa's employee could be laid-off?

One of my friend got an interview( system application tester) from City of Ottawa, she wants to have a stable job which won't be fired in the future.

Steven Harper even worried he would lose job ...

Tell your friend to be a senator in the Parliament.

There will be 600 (if I remember correctly) laid-off at city hall this year. 60 of them has received pink slip

They can be fired much more easier

No, senators are appointed for life, not like their buddies in the green chamber who have to be elected/re-elected in general elections from time to time.

To be exact, senators were initially appointed for life. In 1965, Parliament passed a bill requiring senators to retire at age 75.

A Senator can only be removed for the following reasons:
  • Failure to attend two sessions of Parliament;
  • Declaration of Bankruptcy;
  • Conviction for treason or a felony; and,
  • Ceasing to reside or own property in the represented area
By the way, it is really easy to become a senator. :D

Qualifications for Becoming a Senator
The Constitution Act, 1867, states that a Senator must:
  • Be thirty years of age or over;
  • Own property valued at $4,000, over and above any debts;
  • Be a resident of the province for which they are appointed;
  • Be a natural born or naturalized subject of the Queen; and
  • In Quebec, where there is a Senator for each of the districts formerly represented in the colony of Canada's Legislative Council, a Senator must either own property or reside in the district that he represents.

Not fair indeed!

Well, the next stable job could be a member of the House of Commons. You might want to run for Parliament in an election in the future, because as long as a member of the House of Commons sits in the green chamber for more than four (4) years, he/she will get paid for life.

It's easy to have the minimum requirements to be a senator, that in no way means that it's easy to become one =p

$4,000 meant a lot of money in 1867, after all. How much that would be if that amount of money was translated into today's dollars. Bet not many people could be that rich.

Well, still in no way it will be that easy to become one. :D

I believe judges in the Supreme Court of Canada are also appointed for life, maybe those sitting in the provincial courts of justice too.

Hasn't there just recently been a judge of supreme court that's removed from his/her position for the first time?

Yeah, there must be a reason for a remoal, otherwise they have a "permanent" job. :p
