CBC News
An extortion scheme is targeting business owners in Ottawa's Asian community, said Ottawa police on Tuesday.
Ottawa police said in a release that potential victims are contacted on the phone by people speaking Mandarin.
The callers ask for money and threaten violence.
Similar schemes have been conducted by mail in other cities, the release said, and warned residents not to respond to those letters or phone calls.
Police are urging anyone who is contacted by phone to then immediately dial *57 to trace the number. The information that is gathered by call trace can then be forwarded to police.
Residents who get calls, said police, should also listen for any background noises that might help identify the suspects.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa Police Service at 613-230-6211 or call Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477(TIPS).
