OTTAWA -- New home prices fell more than expected in April, led by declines in major centres in Western Canada.
Statistics Canada said Wednesday that its price index dropped 0.6% during the month, compared with a 0.5% decline in March. For the year, prices are down 3%.
Economists had expected a decline of 0.3% in April.
The index has dropped 3.2% from its high in September 2008, the federal agency said.
The biggest price declines were in Vancouver, down 1.2%, Edmonton, off 0.9%, and Calgary, which fell 0.8%. “In Vancouver, most builders are still reducing prices to encourage sales,” the agency said.
