Tenn. state senator quits after affair with intern

By ERIK SCHELZIG

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Tennessee lawmaker resigned from the state Senate on
Tuesday after his extramarital affair with a 22-year-old intern was revealed
by an investigation into an extortion case.
"Due to recent events, I have decided to focus my full attention on my
family and resign my Senate seat effective August 10," Republican Sen. Paul
Stanley wrote in his resignation letter.

Court records show that Stanley, 47, told agents investigating a blackmail
case that he had a sexual relationship with intern McKensie Morrison. Her
boyfriend, Joel Watts, is charged with trying to extort $10,000 from Stanley
in April. Investigators say Watts demanded the money in exchange for not
releasing to the media explicit photos of Morrison that Stanley had taken in
what appears to be Stanley's apartment.

The senator, a married father of two who represents suburban Memphis, had
signaled he would remain in the legislature, but he said Tuesday that he
decided to step down about an hour before submitting his resignation letter.
Stanley, who was elected to the Senate in 2006 after serving six years in
the state House, had resigned last week as chairman of the powerful Senate
Commerce Committee.

A special election will be held to fill the seat in the Republican-
controlled Senate.

Stanley's legislative proposals were largely focused on pro-business issues,
but he also sponsored failed measures to ban gay couples from adopting
children. He also spoke out against funding for Planned Parenthood because
he said unmarried people should not have sex.

"Whatever I stood for and advocated, I still believe to be true," he said
during an interview Tuesday with Memphis radio station WREC-AM. "And just
because I fell far short of what God's standard was for me and my wife,
doesn't mean that that standard is reduced in the least bit."

Morrison's phone numbers are redacted from her legislative internship
application, and efforts to reach her were unsuccessful Tuesday. Her father
said he didn't want to talk about the situation.

"It's a family matter, and I'm going to approach it that way," Will Morrison
said.

According to court records, Morrison is married to a man who is serving a
seven-year prison sentence in Florida but that he has filed for divorce.

Watts said in an interview with a Nashville TV station last week that he
blamed Stanley for taking advantage of Morrison

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Stanley was in state House six years,
not eight)

While in the legislature he served as Senate Majority Leader. During these
years, Jim West supported several anti-gay bills, including one that would
have banned gays and lesbians from working in schools and day care centers.
He also proposed a law that would ban all sexual activity among persons
under the age of 18 (the bill failed). He would later admit that he
regretted voting for those measures.[1] In 1995, when West was a state
senator, he advocated the impeachment of then-Gov. Mike Lowry for alleged
sexual harassment.

West was involved in a sex scandal in 2005. He was accused of sexually
abusing two young boys in the 1970s and 1980s when he was a sheriff's deputy
and Boy Scout leader. He was also accused of misusing his office as mayor
to lure teenage boys for sexual relationships. West called the molestation
allegations "flat lies". However he admitted to having private online
relationships in the past year through the Gay.com website (see ([3]).

West confirmed the accusations of meeting men over the Internet but denied
the charges that he had sought out minors (see[4]). Using the name "Right-
BiGuy" he allegedly offered internships to young gay men (some of whom were
just graduating from high school - none of whom, however, under the age of
18.

Ted Arthur Haggard (born June 27, 1956) is a former American evangelical
preacher. Known as Pastor Ted to the congregations he served, he is the
founder and former pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs,
Colorado; a founder of the Association of Life-Giving Churches; and was
leader of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) from 2003[1] until
November 2006.

In November 2006, he resigned or was removed from all of his leadership
positions after he admitted soliciting prostitute Mike Jones for homosexual
sex and methamphetamine. Initially Haggard denied even knowing Mike Jones,
but as a media investigation proceeded he acknowledged that some allegations
, such as his purchase of methamphetamine, were true. He later added "sexual
immorality" to his list of confessions.[2]

After the scandal was publicized, Haggard entered three weeks of intensive
counseling, overseen by four ministers. In February 2007, one of those
ministers, Tim Ralph, said that Haggard "is completely heterosexual."[3]
Ralph later said he meant that therapy "gave Ted the tools to help to
embrace his heterosexual side."[4] As of early 2009, Haggard continues to
receive counseling, and now he says that he is a “heterosexual with issues.

On January 23, 2009, officials from Haggard's former church announced that a
young male church member had come forward in 2006 and that there was an "
overwhelming pool of evidence [of an] inappropriate, consensual sexual
relationship [that] went on for a long period of time [with Haggard] ... it
wasn't a one-time act."[76] Haggard's successor, Brady Boyd, said the church
reached a six figure settlement with the man, who was in his early 20s at
the time.[78] According to the man, he said the contact was "not consensual"
and this is not about "opening new wounds" it's about a much larger issue.[

Disgraced pastor Haggard admits second relationship with man

CNN) -- Evangelical pastor Ted Haggard described Thursday as "fundamentally
true" an assertion that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a
20-
year-old male volunteer in 2006.

Pastor Ted Haggard acknowledged on CNN's "Larry King Live" that he had a
second
relationship with a man.

The incident occurred when the two men were in bed together, Grant Haas said
in
a videotaped interview played on CNN's "Larry King Live."

"He pretty much asked me if it was OK if he masturbated in front of me or
masturbated in the bed next to me," Haas said. "I told him no, it would make
me
really uncomfortable. But he grabbed a bottle of lotion and started
masturbating."
Haas added, "(Haggard) used to say to me, 'You know what, Grant, you can
become
a man of God, and you can have a little bit of fun on the side."

Haggard, 52, said the incident was "an indicator of the compulsive behavior"
that ruled him at the time. However, he said he has been undergoing therapy
during the two years since and "working it out." Watch Haggard accuser

Controversy involving Haggard first erupted in November 2006, when a former
prostitute, Mike Jones, said the pastor had paid him for sex over three
years
and had used methamphetamine in his presence.

Haggard initially admitted in interviews that he received a massage from
Jones
but denied having sex with him. He also said he bought methamphetamine, but
threw it away instead of using it.

Haggard is the former president of the National Association of Evangelicals,
which claims to represent millions of people in 45,000 congregations
nationwide. He was also the head pastor at New Life Church.

In a settlement with New Life, the church and Haggard agreed that he would
retain his six-figure salary for a year, leave the Colorado Springs area,
receive counseling and not speak publicly about what had happened for one
year,
according to a church staff member with knowledge of the settlement but who
was
not authorized to speak on the record.

In the CNN interview, Haggard credited Jones with having helped him by
disclosing that information.

"I think he rescued me. I'm very grateful to him," Haggard said. He said he
would have lost the support of his wife of 30 years, Gail, and their five
children "and been a drug addict" had he not been caught.

"I paid a heavy price. It was stupid," he said.

Haggard likened his struggles with his desires to the struggles faced by
dieters who say, "'I'm not going to eat today' and then they eat."

"Many of the charges against me are exaggerated, but it doesn't matter,"
Haggard told Larry King. "I'm guilty enough of so many things."

He acknowledged that his actions were hypocritical, but said he could not
control his urges.

"I felt like God's plan was for sexuality to be in a monogamous,
heterosexual
marriage," he said. "I wanted that. But at the same time, I had these other
things going on."

Haggard said he had thought that focusing on his spiritual life would help,
but
found that it did not. "It actually made me worse," he said.

Haggard said that, for a time, he lost the ability to read the Scriptures
and
became suicidal. "I think it was divine intervention that stopped me," he
said.

Asked if he has engaged in inappropriate conduct with any other men, Haggard
did not give a direct answer, saying only, "I have thoroughly discussed all
of my sexual history with my wife and my therapist and, to some degree, the
family, and we think that's an appropriate boundary for that."

Asked whether he considers himself bisexual or gay, Haggard said that
different
therapists have described him in different ways. "The first said, 'You are a
heterosexual with homosexual attachments.' I wasn't sure what that meant."

His current therapist, he said, described him as "a heterosexual with
complications."

Haggard said he has, at least, another year of therapy ahead of him.

"I think I'm still deeply wounded and scarred and somewhat confused," he
said.
About other men, he added, "I have thoughts from time to time, but not
compelling thoughts."

Nevertheless, he said, "Today, I'm 100 percent satisfied with my
relationship
with my wife, and I have no compelling things in my life toward others."

He said he initially urged his wife to leave him, but she refused.

"I really do love this man," she told CNN when asked why she did not leave.
But it was also her faith that led her to stick with the marriage, she said. "
The
teaching of Jesus is that we forgive and that we love."

She said the two had "a great sexual relationship in our marriage ...
throughout marriage."

Though the news of his unfaithfulness came as a shock, it wasn't completely
out
of the blue, she said. "I knew that Ted had some struggles in this area,
particularly in his thoughts. I never knew that he acted on them."

Marcus Haggard, the couple's 25-year-old son, said he, too, was shocked by
the
revelations, but was more disturbed to learn that his father had lied. Still
,
he said the news brought the family closer together.

"He had lived so long on a pedestal," Marcus Haggard said about his famous
father. "He seemed practically perfect. There was a sense of relief in the
fact that we could connect with our dad."

Asked if he wants to return to the pulpit, Haggard said, "I think Gail and I
both want to tell our story to the degree that it's helpful to other people.
I
don't know that that would mean a pulpit, but certainly I'd be interested in
public speaking."

His appearance Thursday coincided with the debut of an HBO documentary
called
"The Trial of Ted Haggard."
