Toronto teacher gets bail in child exploitation case

Alex Pierson & Ryan Cripps, Global News: Friday, October 2, 2009

David Dewees, 32, of Toronto, has been charged with two counts of luring and two counts of invitation to sexual touching.

A Toronto high school teacher has been released on bail after being charged in a child exploitation investigation.

32-year-old David Dewees, a teacher at Jarvis Collegiate Institute, was released on $25,000 bail and must reside with his parents in their west-end home.

He is also not to use a computer and must stay away from areas with children.

Popular among students, Dewees was arrested Thursday morning at his west-end home as he left for school.

A teacher at Jarvis Collegiate since 2003, he is also a volunteer counsellor at Ontario Pioneer Camp, a christian-based camp in Huntsville.

It's alleged that, at the camp, he had an inappropriate email relationship with two boys under the age of 16 between 2008 and 2009.

Global News has learned a second person, a youth pastor at the camp, also faces sex-related charges in a completely separate incident.

Garth Bent, 49, of Acton is charged with assaulting a 14-year-old in 1982. He was charged in 2008 and is in court later this month.
Officials with the camp say the incident with Bent didn't happen on camp grounds, nor did they have involvement with the investigation as he only volunteered for a week. The more recent case came to their attention in August when the 2 victims came forward.

"We take this very seriously," said Gerry Rodman, President of Inter-Varsity Fellowship. "Dave Dewees had a fresh police check, and a fresh interview with references. We believe we've done the right thing with this case."

Dewees once commented in a student article on teacher crushes in the school paper, the "Jarvis Jargon". In it, he talks about the precautions and professionalism teachers and students must maintain when it comes to interaction. For now, he has been ordered to stay away from those under 18 and has also been suspended from his job.
His next court date is October 15.

Police charge Toronto teacher with child exploitation
Ryan Cripps, Global News: Thursday, October 1, 2009

A teacher at Toronto's Jarvis Collegiate Institute is facing four charges in a child exploitation investigation.

Police say David Dewees, 32, of Toronto, befriended two boys under the age of 16 while working at the Ontario Pioneer Camp in Port Sydney, Ontario, between July 2008 and July 2009.

They allege he had inappropriate contact with them over the internet, and have charged him with two counts of luring and two counts of invitation to sexual touching.

The boys, who are not from Toronto, attended the Christian summer camp in Muskoka, where the teacher volunteered as a male section leader.

Members of the Child Exploitation Section of the Sex Crimes Unit searched the suspects home in the Dundas Street West and Bloor Street West area, and seized a computer and a digital camera.
Police say the accused used a number of online accounts as a method of communication, including Yukonlovestherapids@hotmail.com,
Davedewees@tricolour.queensu.ca, Yukon@pioneercamp.ca, and David.dewees@sympatico.ca.

Dewees has been a grade 10 teacher at Jarvis Collegiate since 2003 as well as volunteeing at the Pioneer Camp between 1997 and 2009.
"Mr. Dewees has the capacity in his employment and his volunteer activities to have contact with children as a person of trust or authority," said Det. Bill McGarry of the Toronto Police Service. "We want to reach out to any potential victims who have yet to come forward."

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning.

其实也许一死了之也好,省得到法庭里丢人现眼了。在那个CAMP里干了十几年,不知多少小男孩已经被他“关爱”过了。这一死,就再不会被追究、被调查了。

CBC News - Toronto - Toronto teacher facing sex charges commits suicide: reports

Last Updated: Sunday, October 4, 2009 | 7:37 PM ET

A Toronto high school teacher charged with trying to initiate sexual contact with two teenage boys has died after jumping in front of a subway train, local media are reporting.

David Dewees, who taught Grade 10 at Toronto's Jarvis Collegiate Institute, died at the High Park subway station on Saturday, the Toronto Star reported Sunday, citing unnamed sources. He was 32.
Police acknowledged that a man died after being injured on the tracks on Saturday morning, but declined to disclose his identity.

Dewees was arrested and charged Thursday with two counts of invitation to sexual touching as well as two counts of luring, Toronto police said.

He was accused of making "inappropriate contact" with the boys online, police said in a release.

Dewees was alleged to have committed those offences at the Ontario Pioneer Camp in Port Sydney, Ont., between July 2008 and July 2009. He had been a volunteer counsellor at the Christian camp since 1997, Det. Bill McGarry told reporters Thursday.

The two boys are both under age 16, he said. Neither of the two lives in Toronto.

McGarry clarified that while Dewees was accused of soliciting sexual contact, police believed no actual touching occurred.

Police believed there were other victims.

Some school staff and social workers are expected to gather at Jarvis Collegiate Institute on Monday, and grief counsellors will be present to help students deal with the death, the paper said.

Cops still investigating teacher | Toronto & GTA | News | Toronto Sun

The investigation into camp counsellor and local high school teacher David Dewees continues, even after he took his own life, police said yesterday.

"There's children out there that might need some sort of counselling," Toronto Police Det. Bill McGarry said. "We really don't know what we're facing until we reach those kids."

Dewees was arrested Thursday on charges of luring and invitation to sexual touching after allegations surfaced involving e-mails sent to two teenaged boys he had met while volunteering as a counsellor at Ontario Pioneer Camp near Huntsville.

The 32-year-old Jarvis Collegiate Institute teacher was released on $25,000 bail before jumping in front of a train at High Park subway station Saturday.

Hours after Dewees was arrested at his west-end home, McGarry appealed to other potential victims to come forward. Dewees' picture was released, as well as several e-mail addresses he used.
Since Dewees' death, several of his students and colleagues have expressed anger over the media coverage his charges received -- coverage that was, compared to similar sex crimes investigations, standard.

"To think that all this media hype drove an innocent man to an early grave before he had a chance to prove his innocence!" wrote a man who identified himself as a former camp colleague.

More than 100 students gathered at High Park subway station yesterday to hold a vigil for their teacher. With bouquets of flowers and signs that blamed the news coverage for his death, many students cursed at members of the media who approached them.

Dewees' suicide and the comments that followed are troubling for Karyn Kennedy, executive director of BOOST Child Abuse Prevention and Intervention, which provides services to victims of abuse.
"It's very difficult to come forward when sexual abuse or sexual exploitation has happened. It takes a lot of courage. And for a victim to come forward and then have something like this happen, which is a tragedy for everybody, is going to discourage potentially others from coming forward," Kennedy said yesterday.

McGarry wouldn't comment on whether other children have come forward since his appeal, but said, "We're still getting tips. We're actively following up on leads."

"No doubt, maybe he was a great teacher, but that's not what we're dealing with," McGarry added.

"We're dealing with some very serious crimes against children."
