瑞典皇家科学院十月六日宣布,华人科学家高锟(Charles Kao)以及两名美国科学家韦拉德-博伊尔(Willard Boyle)和乔治-史密斯(George Smith)获得2009年诺贝尔物理学奖,以奖励他们在光纤和半导体领域上的开创性研究。渥太华是世界知名光谷,有许多华裔在本地从事(过)与光微电子相关的工作。本会议主题讨论:“多元文化(融合)与人类进步”可分成以下三个分主题:

Background & Theme of the Seminar
Three “masters of light” considered the fathers of fiber optics and digital imaging were honored Tuesday (October 6) with the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Ethnic Chinese Charles K. Kao, an alumni of Nortel Networks[FONT=&quot][3][/FONT], received half of the $1.4 million prize for his discovery that led to a breakthrough in fiber optics, while the other half of the prize will be split between former Bell Laboratories colleagues Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, inventors of the first successful imaging technology using a digital sensor called a charge-coupled device (CCD), which eliminated the need to capture images on film. Ottawa is a world-renowned Optical Valley and there are many ethnic Chinese here engaged in work related to photonics. The theme of the seminar is “Multiculturalism and Progress of Mankind”, which can be divided into the following three sub themes:
  • Professor Charles Kao and I (Kao’s student, colleagues, etc.)
  • The essence of traditional Chinese culture, the pioneering research work of Professor Charles Kuen Kao, and the relationship between
  • “Spirits of Charles Kao Kuen” and the future rehabilitation of the Ottawa Optics Valley

[FONT=&quot][1][/FONT] 一九六六年,高锟在 STLsStandard Telecommunication Laboratories, Harlow, United Kingdom)以一根玻璃棒当作光学讯号的传输载体,提出“光纤每公里传输耗损率是二十分贝”的理论假设,四年后被美国康宁公司证实。一九八二年,康宁进一步改良到每公里仅耗损○.二分贝,把光纤通讯效率拉到极限,为讯号传递带来革命,他也被冠上“光纤之父”美名。高锟于一九八七年离开STLs 到香港中文大学出任第三任校长。STLs于一九八九年被北电收购。

[FONT=&quot][3][/FONT] Nortel acquired Britain's STC, including STLs (Standard Telecommunication Laboratories Harlow, United Kingdom) in 1989. Dr. Gao left STLs as the 3rd Chancellor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China in 1987.

为什么要特别提到祝贺高锟教授荣获一半奖金而不是获诺贝尔物理奖本身呢?
