Depending on how often you trade stock. if you are long term investor, any discounted brokerage like TD, BMO, Royal Bank are good choice. If you wish to time market and trade a lot, Questrade in Canada and Interactive Broker are best one due to lowest commission fee.

Commission fee per trade:

Questrade ($4.99)

CD$4.99, No charge for low account activity.

Interactive Broker ($1.0)

$0.005 per share for US stock, but minimum is US$1.0 per order
$0.01 per share for Canada stock, but minimum is CD$1.0 per order

Low account activity charge is US$120 annually. This fee is exempt if trade commission exceed some amount. check their website for more info.

Example:

1. Buy US stock:

100 Shares @ USD 50 Share Price= USD 1.00

1,000 Shares @ USD 50 Share Price = USD 5.00


2. Buy Canada stock:

100 Shares @ CAD 50 Share Price = CAD 1.00
