Anyone in Ontario who wants the H1N1 flu shot will now be able to get it, regardless of age or medical condition.

Ontario's top medical officer of health made the directive on Wednesday, hours after Ottawa health officials started offering the vaccine to the general public.

"The reason we were able to do that was because of the increase supply and also balancing with the demand," said Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa's associate medical officer of health.

She warned although some residents may think swine flu is on the decline, the virus is still circulating.

"What I can tell you is we still have H1N1 illness in our community," she said.

Now that the vaccine is available to everyone, public health officials expect longer lineups at flu clinics; some people may even be turned away.

Prior to abandoning the priority groups, 20 per cent of Ottawa residents had already received the vaccine.

Public health hopes 40 per cent of the population will be immunized by the end of the campaign.
