The 87-minute DVD documentary to be screened is a chronicle of Chinese October 1st National Day celebrations and military parades in Beijing. The unique archived footages are set in the context of contemporary political and social developments in China. National day celebrations and a military parade in Beijing were not held each year, sometimes not for successive years, either for reasons of economy but also for other reasons. The 1976 October 1st celebrations were cancelled following the deaths of Zhou Enlai, Mao, and Peng Dehuai that year. But the 1984 celebrations were on a grand scale following the Agreement between the PRC and the U.K. about the handover of Hong Kong. The English commentary in this documentary provides revealing insight into the political context of the time, and Chinese domestic as well as international developments.
This documentary is part three of an acclaimed three-part DVD collection produced by CCTV which begins with the massive celebrations held in Beijing this October 1st for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
