Crowd protests arrest of man for peace T-shirt

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. - About 100 demonstrators staged a protest at a shopping mall near Albany, N.Y., Wednesday, after a lawyer was arrested for wearing an anti-war T-shirt at the mall.
The marchers told mall managers that they would only stop their protest when the mall explained its policy and dropped the charges.
On Monday, mall security guards asked 61-year-old lawyer Stephen Downs and his son to either take off T-shirts they had bought at the mall or leave.
The shirts had slogans reading "Peace on Earth" and "Give Peace a Chance."
Downs' 31-year-old son, Roger, removed his shirt, but Downs refused.
Charges laid
The guards called police, who charged him with trespassing.
Downs, a lawyer with a state commission that looks into the conduct of judges, has pleaded not guilty.
Police said they had no choice but to lay charges because the mall is private property and Downs refused to leave.
Mall managers could not be reached for comment.
